A night of celebration for Doora Barefield ladies

FOLLOWING a very successful year, the Old Ground Hotel, Ennis was the venue for the celebrations of the Doora Barefield Ladies Football Club last weekend Players, mentors, friends and families gathered amid a sea of maroon and white to recognise the great achievements, both on and off the pitch, for an outstanding group of players, who brought home silverware at U-12, U-14, U-16 and minor levels last year. Clare hurling legend and Doora Barefield clubman, Jamesie O’Connor, presented the medals to the girls, while Sean Lenihan, chairman of the ladies football club, acknowledged the combined contribution from players, mentors, committee and parents that resulted in a very successful 2013 season. The U-12 girls won both the East Clare Regional League Final and the Division 1 Championship. This was their third year in-a-row to win both and a special award was presented to four players, Aisling Reidy, Amy Lenihan, Chloe Towey and Niamh O’Keefe, who played on all three winning teams. …

CLARE ladies’ football referees will have to learn the rules of the game if they are to hang on to their whistles in 2013. They are to be hauled in to take part in a refresher course on the playing rules before the new season starts.

Clare ladies outgunned by high-scoring Galway

Galway         5-19 Clare             2-16 CONNACHT champions Galway cruised into the last four of the 2012 TG4 All-Ireland Ladies Senior Football Championship following a 12-point victory against Clare at St Brendan’s Park, Birr, on Saturday afternoon.Edel Concannon hit 1-7 as the westerners booked their place in a first semi-final since 2005. The teams met twice in the Division 2 league with Galway also winning both games. Despite being on the losing side, Clare’s magnificent full-forward Niamh O’Dea claimed the player of the match award, having scored 1-6 of her 1-8 tally from play. Clare manager Darragh Kelly had a testing day as he lined out with Kilkee against Doora-Barefield at 12noon that day in Kilmihil, before rushing to Birr in time for the 4.15pm throw-in. Clare ladies chase U-16C crown

CLARE’S third juvenile team to take to the national stage this season will play in the U-16C All-Ireland final when they take on Leitrim on Saturday at 2.30pm in Banagher. Clare, captained by Katie Connolle, fell in the first round to Tipperary, who eventually won Munster and are appearing in the All-Ireland B final against Cavan this weekend.A cracking Munster C final against Limerick saw Clare fight all the way for a two-point win, having led comprehensively in the first half. A second-half revival by Limerick led to a Player of the Match performance from the Clare goalie, Aoife O’Neill, which showed the character displayed on the day by the Saffron and Blue defence. Ladies gear up for Round 2

THIS weekend, the second round of the Armada Hotel Junior, Intermediate and Senior Championships take place.West Clare Gaels and Liscannor are in action on Sunday in Quilty at 10am, while Banner Ladies and Cooraclare are also in action (venue and time to be confirmed). West Clare Gaels will be eager to get a win having suffered defeat at the hand of Banner Ladies last Sunday, while Liscannor, who recorded a seven point win over Cooraclare, will push the West Clare outfit all the way. In the intermediate championship, Clooney-Quin who had a bye last weekend, play Fergus Rovers on Sunday evening. The game is provisionally fixed for Éire Óg at 7pm, while Doonbeg have a bye in this round. Last weekend, Fergus Rovers suffered a two-point defeat against the Magpies so they must win on Sunday to stay in the competition.
