Dooley pays tribute to Albert Reynolds

Fianna Fáil TD for Clare Timmy Dooley has expressed his sadness upon hearing of the death of former taoiseach Albert Reynolds.

“Albert Reynolds was an innovative businessman, as well as a determined and single-minded politician, who worked tirelessly to bring about peace on this island. The signing of the Downing Street Declaration and his legacy in bringing about the IRA ceasefire is probably his greatest achievement.

“He left his mark on every ministry he held, and played an integral role in bringing business to County Clare. As minister for industry and commerce he progressed the evolution of the Shannon Industrial Zone. His key focus was on attracting inward investment by US multinationals and his background in business gave him an insight into what was needed to bring major companies to the country,” Deputy Dooley said.

The Clare TD said ,as a politician representing a constituency outside of Dublin, Mr Reynolds realised the importance of balanced regional development and was a keen supporter of the Shannon region, bringing jobs and investment to the area.

“During his tenure in that department he was a regular visitor to Shannon industrial zone supporting existing companies and working to attract new business. There is no doubt that the Shannon area benefitted enormously from his time in office,” he said.

Mr Dooley extended his sympathies and that of Clare Fianna Fáil to his wife, Kathleen and the extended Reynolds family.
