The first round of the Clare senior hurling championship will feature eight games this weekend. Derrick Lynch previews the action. O’Callaghans Mills v Broadford A mouthwatering East Clare derby with the men from Broadford finally at the promised land of senior hurling. That will carry momentum with it, while the Mills are coming off the back of a disappointing 2019. Form goes out the window in these games, but the greater senior experience of the Mills should see them through. Verdict: O’Callaghan’s Mills Clonlara v Newmarket Two sides who will see this game as one that is there to be won, and two sides who will desperately want to hit the ground running. The result of Saturday’s All-Ireland senior hurling semi-final between Clare and Galway will determine the start up date for the domestic senior hurling and football championships. Club representatives attended a meeting at Clareabbey on this Monday evening where two schedules of games were outlined. In the event of the county senior hurlers qualifying for the All-Ireland senior final by beating Galway on Saturday, it is proposed to play first round games in the senior football championship over the weekend of August3, 4,/5 and 6 with round two to be played on the weekend of August 25/26. Round 3 will take place on September 22/23 followed by the quarter finals on October 6/7, semi-finals on 20/21 and the final on November 4. In this schedule the hurling title race will begin on September ½ with round 2 a week later (September 8/9) and round three on September 15/16. The Clare team which will line out against Limerick in the quarter final of the Munster under 21 hurling championship at Cusack Park on Monday evening includes players from ten clubs. Seven of the eight senior football championship quarter finalists are now known following today’s action in round three of the race for the Jack Daly Cup. Prior to this afternoon’s games Cooraclare, Cratloe, and champions Kilmurry-Ibrickane had secured their passage to the last eight and they have now been joined by Clondegad who overcame Lissycasey in their second round replay at Cooraclare. Extra time was again required and with just four minutes remaining Paudge McMahon struck for a goal for Clondegad which sealed their passage. Lissycasey remain in the running for a last eight place and they will now meet Ennistymon in the remaining round three game. Doonbeg, Miltown and Eire Og all won their passage to the quarter finals this afternoon when they accounted for St. Jozephs, O’Currys and Corofin respectively. There were a number of outstanding individual performances as key games were played in the Clare senior hurling championship this Saturday afternoon. Extra time was required as Clooney-Quin and Feakle battled to remain in the title race in Shannon where a tour de force from Peter Duggan who contributed 2-13 proved decisive in Clooney-Quin’s 2-22 to 2-14 victory over Feakle who now must focus on the battle to avoid relegation. The winners held a five point lead, 1-8 to 1-3, at the end of the opening half. Feakle had drawn level by the three quarter stage and led by three points as the game entered ‘injury time’. The game was in the third minute of ‘added time’ when Duggan found the net to level the tie for the fourth time. They went on to dominate the extra period. Whitegate’s one point win over Cratloe in the opening round of the Clare senior hurling championship is the big talking point in Clare hurling circles this Saturday evening. While there was speculation in the lead up to the tie, played at Dr, Daly park in Tulla, as to how it might go, Cratloe remained the favourites to get their campaign off to a wining start. Substitute Eoin Patterson proved to be the East Clare side’s hero as he struck for their fourth goal which came at the death. Cratloe started well and held an early four point lead but then Whitegate got the upperhand and when the half time whistle sounded they were 3-5 to 0-9 in front.
