Greywater project a winner for Lisdoonvarna students

TWO students from Mary Immaculate Secondary School have, quite literally, shown that you can muddy the waters and be rewarded for your efforts. The Grey Area Within Greywater is the title of a project by Alice Davoren and Emily Cullinan that has won the Junior Water Category at the national Young Environmentalist Awards, which were. Now in its 21st year, the awards, hosted by ECO-UNESCO, recognise the efforts made by young people aged 10 to 18 years old across Ireland who have worked towards improving the environment. Alice and Emily’s project looked at the effects of using greywater on the chemistry and the earthworm population in soil. Having found that it had a negative effect on the population of earthworms, they created an awareness campaign to highlight the damaging effects of greywater on biodiversity in the soil. Clare interest in Fitzgibbon Cup

ALMOST 20 Clare hurlers will be involved in quarter-final action in the Fitzgibbon Cup next week, following results in Round 3 on Tuesday. Limerick’s three third-level institutions have all qualified for the knock-out stage of the competition. Title holders Mary Immaculate College drew with IT Carlow (0-18 each), with Eoin Quirke (Whitegate), Colm Galvin (Clonlara) and Michael O’Neill (Kilmaley) in their first 15. Hosts of this year’s finals weekend, NUI Galway also drew on Tuesday when they played Cork IT. The game ended at 0-19 each and Clare players in the Galway line-up were Conor Cleary (Miltown, St Joseph’s), who is the captain, and Oisín Donnellan (Feakle). Sixmilebridge’s Barry Fitzpatrick missed the game due to a hand injury. The Davy Fitzgerald-managed Limerick IT recorded another victory when they were 5-14 to 3-13 winners over Waterford IT. Students walk and talk for Pieta House

A walk for all of Limerick’s third level students as a fundraiser for Pieta House will take place  next week. Mary Immaculate College Students’ Union, Limerick Institute of Technology Students’ Union, University of Limerick Students’ Union and Limerick Sports Partnership are behind the initiative. Organisers say the aim of the fundraiser is to show a united front in relation to the issues of mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The Walk and Talk takes place on Tuesday at 8pm sharp from The Potato Market, Merchant’s Quay. The event will be centred around the bridges of Limerick City to show solidarity for those we have lost and raise awareness for those who are struggling. The issues of mental health awareness and suicide prevention affect every community,” commented MISU vice president and event organiser, Alison Dervan. “The Student Unions of Limerick feel it is important to show we all stand together in raising awareness and much needed funds for Pieta House.”

Young scientists prepare for national exhibit

Students across Clare and South Galway are busy putting the finishing touches to their projects in the run-up to the BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition 2015. From the science behind the voting in the Euro Vision to the correlation between mathematics and music, this year’s exhibition promises to be more exciting than ever with a huge range of projects on offer guaranteed to fascinate all visitors. There was a record number of entries this year making the 51st exhibition the biggest yet. Visitors will find 1,185 students displaying 550 projects, 22 of which are Clare entries, along with four more areas packed full of science and technology exhibits. Among those taking part are students from: Seamount College, Kinvara; Ennsitymon CBS, Rice College, Ennis; Kilrush Community School; St John Bosco Community College, Kildysart; Scoil Mhuire, Ennistymon; and, Ennis Community College, Gaelcholaíste an Chlaír. Young Scientist awards for Lisdoonvarna pupils

PUPILS from Mary Immaculate Secondary School in Lisdoonvarna were celebrating on Friday night when the awards were presented at this year’s BT Young Scientist Exhibition at the RDS in Dublin. Stephen O’Connell won the intermediate individual award in the Biological and Ecological Sciences category with his project, Grading Crab Meat – an easier way? In the Social and Behavioural Sciences category, Rhianna McMahon and Keelan McMahon came second in the senior group section with their project, The Changing Geography of the Young Scientist Competition. They also won the EMC Data Hero Award, while Tess Casasin Sheridan and Aoife Doherty won the Geological Survey of Ireland award for their project, Why are the Beaches in Clare Different Colours? There was a record number of entries for the exhibition, which continues until Saturday. The 50th competition saw 2,000 ideas submitted by 4,418 students from across 32 counties.
